Hi. I have a short story to tell you about how the Ad Industry uses our personal data and what we can all do to take back our right to privacy; maybe even make some money along the way if you want to sell your own.
It will literally only take you few minutes or you can click over to our website www.about-face.com at any time with the link at the top of the screen. (say “at any time” only once)
It happens from sunrise to sunset, every day of our lives, more or less the same way. Keep watching and I will explain how.
It starts with people I’ll call Ad Spies; who are basically any people who work for companies involved in buying or selling our personal data.
The first thing Ad Spies do is find out who we are and where we live.
They do this by collecting our home mailing address, our internet IP address,
and also our mobile phone and TV set IDs. They put cookies on our computers and now personal assistants like Alexa are listening to us all the time too.
Once the Ad Spies know how to target us,
they start to gather information about our Interests and our habits.
Like when we go to work or school and what routes we take using our gps location
They learn our driving habits from the apps on our phones and from that data they can
also figure out what we do and where we work
Things like directory listings, emails, phone numbers and websites we use help them to know how we spend our free time and how we use technology.
All of this information about us is valuable to brands, advertisers, recruiters and others who want to market products and services to us.
They can also use GPS and other methods to find out where we like to shop and what we like to buy for ourselves.
Our internet purchases and our credit cards help ad spies to know what we actually spend our money on.
like for pets or groceries.
Or when our lifestyle patterns are changing.
Say for example when we’re shopping for a new car…
or a new home for our family; insurance companies, banks and credit card companies pay a lot to know this valuable marketing information about you.
When we’re at home and listen to music, watch TV or surf the internet with our family and friends
the Ad Spies can see all these things through the internet. They collect this information and keep track of it.
In fact, by the end of any given day, Ad Spies have pretty much figured out everything we are interested in and they sell it to advertisers for a nice profit they keep all for themselves.
