Story
What is grief?
Grief is a natural and deeply personal response to loss. It is often associated with the death of a loved one, an experience that can shake our entire world and demand an enormous personal adjustment.
However, it can also arise from other kinds of losses, such as losing one’s home, community or sense of security, which can be deeply painful.
Grief isn’t something you get over. It’s something you go through.
Grief is not a state. It is a process that takes time. It can be painful, confusing and exhausting, but it is also an essential part of the healing journey.
Everyone experiences grief differently. Still, many people experience certain symptoms.
Emotional and cognitive reactions can include sadness, anger, anxiety, loneliness, yearning, disbelief, confusion, preoccupation and dreams about the person who passed away or the place that was lost.
Physical symptoms may involve a hollow feeling in the stomach, a lump in the throat, aching arms, disrupted sleep or appetite.
Grief can also manifest in difficulty engaging with others or functioning in social roles, questioning the meaning of life and feeling disconnected from or angry at a higher power.
These reactions can be a natural part of the grieving process, but if they persist or significantly interfere with daily life, seeking professional support may be helpful.
Remember, everyone grieves differently and grieving takes time.
