Story

An active threat is an emergency situation where an individual or individuals actively engage in harming or attempting to harm people, typically using firearms or other weapons.
These situations can be dynamic, unpredictable, and evolve quickly.
If faced with an active threat, every second counts. Preparedness will be key. Know your surroundings. You have three options to protect your safety.
Determine your best action.
Run,
Hide,
Fight.
Run.
Escape if you can. This is often your first and best option.
Don’t wait for others to act and leave belongings behind.
Warn others if possible but prioritize your safety.
Call 911 as soon as it’s safe to do so.
Hide.
If running isn’t possible, hide in a safe location, like a classroom or office.
Close and lock or barricade doors, close curtains, turn off lights, and stay quiet.
Silence your phone and stay low.
Remain hidden until police arrive, be prepared to stay hidden for a long time.
Fight.
If there’s no way to run or hide, be prepared to fight.
Work with others if possible and use improvised objects as weapons.
Commit to and use physical aggression to defend yourself–
your goal is to incapacitate the assailant to reduce harm to yourself or others.
When law enforcement arrives, stay calm and follow their instructions. The first officers will focus on stopping the threat, not helping the injured.
Drop any items, keep your hands visible, and avoid sudden movements.
Don’t shout or run toward police.
Walk calmly if directed to move.
Rescue and support teams will follow
After the incident, you may be kept in a safe area to collect statements.
Stay informed paying attention to UBC ALERT text messages, the UBC SAFETY App, Website, and more to learn when it is safe again.
Be Prepared.
Always be aware of your surroundings, ask yourself “what if” and plan ahead. Know where the exits are.
Remember, in an active threat situation, every second counts.
Run if you can! Hide if you must! Fight if you have no other choice. Help is on the way.
