Story: Look at this girl who’s just turned 12. Her way through adolescence should be a unique and formative time, yet, because of negative early life experiences she's now exposed to very dangerous situations. Her life is spiraling out of control. She soon starts using alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism. Now, what will her life be like? As a woman with substance use disorder, she’s more likely to face gender-based violence.

She’ll be more exposed to early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. She’ll certainly be stigmatized for not fulfilling traditional gender roles. As a result, she will have little support to enter the treatment. Even if she does, she’s more likely to drop out and fall off the wagon because most programs fail to address the needs of women.

Let’s go back and imagine she enrolls in a gender-specific program. She learns how to cope with daily challenges, receives valuable life skills, and with her life back on track, resumes her studies. She knows her value and self-worth; she takes care of herself. More than that, she’s now ready to stand up for other women, helping them raise their voices and demand the services they are entitled to. Empower Women — Empower Society.
